Different Kinds of Stage Lighting

One of the most important aspects during a concert, play, dance, or stage performance is lighting. It is not only used for illumination but also for several other purposes. For example, it changes the perception of shapes on the stage, points the audience's attention to an area , sets the tone of the stage, or establishes or changes the position in time and space. It can even be used as a part of a plot or to suggest a scene crucial to the performance.

There are many types of lighting devices that are used during performances. For example, parabolic aluminised reflector lights, or PAR cans, are large devices that are utilised to focus a large amount of flat lighting to a scene. All PAR cans, with the exception of those with narrow lenses, project large, oval pools of lights. Another common type of stage lighting equipment is the cylorama. This device consists of multiple lamps that are arranged in a housing, sending off light that is perpendicular to its length. The lamps are typically covered with gels of multiple colours with each colour controlled by a separate dimmer circuit. This allows the lighting director to establish the mood of a stage.

One of the most common lighting equipment is a spotlight, which uses special lenses to generate a focused pool of light used to highlight a performer or a certain part of the stage. Finally, LED lights are also in common use in today's stages and are known for their beautiful effects and versatility. LED lights are preferred by many modern lighting directors because they provide a large amount of output with low power consumption. In addition, by mixing three primary LED colours, usually red, green, and blue, a lighting director can theoretically generate 16 million different colours!
