Idle talk, especially about the private affairs of others, is one of the oldest means of sharing unproven information. As distinguished from gossip though, rumour has a more political tone. Both, however, have one thing in common—a bad reputation for inducing errors or other variations of the facts and views transmitted. To speak ill about other's personal business is to interfere in the smooth social relations of individuals. Considering man’s tendency to do so, it has undermined not only the privacy of many people but also the very fabric of society.
Interestingly, no matter how wasteful the talk is, organisations in general would not exist without it. The institutions that we know today were made possible with some help from gossiping. As a consequence, speech has enabled man to maintain social networks and have friends and relationships.
Apparently, gossiping has many beneficial uses. First, it makes it possible to share news about the lives of one's friends and closest relations. Second, it is a way to seek advice from others. Third, you can use it to advertise for social and business purposes. And fourth, it helps us deal with the problem of commons, which refers to the free riders in an organised network (those who put their selfish interests before the group's welfare).
